For far too long, we have witnessed the exclusion of descendants in communicating their own history, especially in the tourism industry. Louisiana's tourism industry has relied heavily on the glamorization of plantation life and the continued exploitation of the enslaved from which we descend. We aim to change this through our Descendant Engaged Tourism which finally gives descendants a voice in their representation and encourages their participation. We work with our community in shaping dignified narratives that honor the role of the enslaved while exploring other elements of our culture outside of plantation life. Our program will also provide descendants with greater access to the tourism economy.
