The Descendants Project, the Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies, and The Slave Dwelling Project invite you to attend a screening of the new Blue Lobster Tales Production documentary “Vacation Plantation” with a panel discussion immediately following the showing. The documentary and panel features Jo Banner, co-founder of The Descendants Project, and Joseph McGill Jr., founder of the Slave Dwelling Project & Co-Author of Sleeping with the Ancestors, who critically review plantation tourism and its impact on the stories of enslavement.
This event is proudly sponsored by the Midlo Center for New Orleans Studies.
“Today, in the American South, there are as many historic plantation sites open to the public as there are Krispy Kreme locations across the United States. These sites indulge tourists’ fantasies, rather than the horrific realities of the past. Vacation Plantation grants unparalleled access to the modern American plantation tourism industry – from the priorities of today’s plantation owners, to the political balancing act of State representatives, to the descendants of the enslaved fighting for change. Archaeologist Lauren Cudmore goes on a journey to understand why millions of tourists continue to vacation at these sites of historic trauma.” -Blue Lobster Tales
